Hello! I’m a media-type but one of the really good ones…:-) I run a social enterprise called On Road Media that promotes diversity and inclusion on the web through training and project work.
I started out at the BBC as a freelance producer andwent on to set up the Prison Radio Outreach Project in a London men’s prison for Media for Development. We trained prisoners to make good audio about their lives for a new, in-house prison radio station “Radio Wanno” and supported them to make better decisions about what to do on the outside.
After a stint at the Guardian producing their first podcasts (in a tiny room with egg-cartons on the walls) I set up On Road Media in 2005 – www.onroadmedia.org.uk. I was supported by Unltd Awards Level 1 & 2 and the School for Social Entrepreneurs.
On Road Media is a social enterprise that supports diversity and inclusion on the web and in the media through projects and training.
We are passionate about social and digital inclusion, working with marginalised communities in seeking solutions to social problems.
We use web technology and the media for social innovation and social change. We’ve worked with young people, the Gypsy and Traveller community, people with experiences of homelessness and addiction and the transgender community. Take a look at some of our projects here.
What we do can be messy and unpredictable because we’re learning in this space. There is still so much that we don’t know about the potential of the web and I like to think that we’re fearless learners that make good decisions about when and how to change direction.
And what we do can also be ground-breaking. We want to work with the most excluded people on the most challenging of projects.
I’m half-Irish, half-Belgian and grew up in both countries. I read English at Trinity in Dublin and have an MA in International Journalism from City University in London.
